The path out of Helmsley goes along the left hand side of a small sheltered housing estate before opening out to the side of the Helmsley Cricket Club.

Continue straight along the tarmac path to a swing gate in the corner.

The path should go right along the fence to the corner and then left along the fence again to the far corner to go through a field gate and walk along the left hand fence to the next corner.

Go left here into another grass field with a wide path heading to the woods. The path narrows into the wood, going through another gate before emerging onto a wide forest track.

A signpost shows the direction of the walk towards Carlton. The track is followed for approx 2 kilometres past a wild flower meadow on the right.

The track starts to rise before the route turns back on itself and climbs up through the woods and out onto Keld Lane to join the minor road coming out of Carlton.

Turn left and walk along the road

The farm track eventually meets Northfield Lane. Cross the lane and go through the gate opposite into a grazing field and keep to the right hand side before passing through a footpath gate.

Go left descending into Pinderdale Howl and then right along a well defined path into the bottom of the dale.

The path ascends up the other side crossing a forest track and continue to go up through the wood to reach a field gate.

The route now follows the field hedge to another minor road. Cross the road and descend towards the wood.

Go directly into and straight through the wood, climbing up to Howldale Lane.

Follow the lane directly in front of you past Nawton Tower and its gates until it reaches a T Junction with another minor road.

Turn left here and walk down Skiplam Road for approx 2 kilometres before the Tabular Hills Walk leaves to the left along a wide track to the top edge of the wood  above Kirk Dale.
